But managing a stock pond for fish is not that easy as it needs your full involvement and interest in the fish pond. Make sure you have selected the correct location for the fish pond. The design of the pond should be comfortable for the aquatic life. Keep the banks of the pond with the slope of 3:1. The minimum depth for the stock pond should be around eight feet in order to give them a maximum room to move around. The growth of the aquatic plants should also be given proper space to grow.
Furthermore keep the quantity of fish in your pond according to its size, as one inch fish needs one gallon of water to move around, so make sure you are not over-loading the pond with too many fish.
Make sure that the water you are stocking in the pond is clean and free of pollution. Keep changing the water after some specific period of time in order to maintain the cleanliness in the pond. Always check your water with the testing machine to make sure that the components in the water are balanced. Add fish in the pond after the aquatic plants are reasonably grown. You can also add the floating plants in your pond but keep tapering them to avoid their excess spread. They give a very beautiful look to your stock pond; moreover they work as a shade for the fish.
If you are stocking only goldfish, koi, and mosquito fish in your pond then you don’t need to have a heater in the pond as all of them are cold water fish and they have stamina to survive in varying water temperatures. But if you are adding other species as well then installation of the heater in pond is essential.
Whenever the water temperature goes below 55 degrees F, turn on the heater. The installation of largemouth bass and peacock bass helps a lot in maintaining the population of fish and to avoid the population explosion.
To keep the usual balance in the pond, try to add a wide range of species in your pond as the variety in food creates a natural stability in the pond. But always consult some professional while stoking the variety of species as there are some species which cannot live together so make sure you are not keeping those species together. To increase the natural production of aquatic plants, don’t forget to add the suitable amount of fertilizer in the water.
Also add water snails, tadpoles, pollywogs and mussels in the water. It will give a natural ambiance to the fish pond. These plants and insects are also considered as the basic feed for the fish.
