Fundamentals Functions of Car Radiator
Nowadays, it is advisable that you know how to drive. Just the same, it is also important that you know the basics of driving including the parts of your car and their functions. This way, you will be able to identify what part of the car is in need of repair, what can be done in general, and how it can be done based on the functions of the car parts. Knowing these details will help you keep yourself and your family away from dangers on the road.
One of the important parts of a car is the car radiator. Understanding how the car radiator works will help you determine indications of damage and wearing out. Let’s see how knowing the fundamental functions of a car radiator will help you identify and solve car problems.
In this article, let us use the Vauxhall as a point of reference. Vauxhall radiators are similar to other radiators in other models, with which the radiators work the same under the same concepts. If you remember, the fundamental and primary function of the car radiator is to maintain the coolness of the engine. The car radiator keeps the engine from overheating. It is very important that the car radiator is maintained and kept cool because an overheated radiator causes frequent car breakdowns. In addition, this can result to unexpected minor accidents and worse, deadly collisions.
Inside of a Radiator
Composed of chambers located alongside the engine, a radiator’s chambers contain a coolant fluid. This coolant fluid is made from a combination of water and anti-freeze, and this mixture flows through the chambers as you drive the car. As it flows it draws the heat from the engine, carrying the heat into the main chamber of the radiator. The coolant liquid flows back to the other chambers if the liquid is already cool. The process repeats – the liquid draws heat from the engine and carries it out into the main chamber, cools, and then flows back to draw out more heat. By this process the engine is kept cool, keeping the car working properly.
If the engine overheats, it causes the pistons to take hold in their cylinders, resulting to full breakage. If the cylinders break, the car breaks down. In addition, an overheated radiator can cause other problems in other parts.
Usually, steam and smoke come out from the engine. If you noticed a driver pulling over with a smoking engine upfront or a pulled over car at the side of the road with the hood of the car open, the car radiator surely overheated or is overheating. If your car radiator overheats, the first thing you must do is, like what these drivers we mentioned, pull over and stop the engine from running. Let the radiator fully cool down before taking your car to your regular mechanic. If you think your car radiator is working ineffectively, don’t risk driving long travels. An improperly working car radiator can out your life and your family of friends’ lives in danger. If you’re travelling for vacation, that’s definitely what you plant to head to.
